This custom designed timber frame entryway serves as an aesthetic focal point to a highly-efficient home with otherwise simple exterior lines. It is built with locally-sourced and locally sawn Eastern White Pine timbers on a deck of white oak.
The design is known as a modified king post truss. This same type of truss can be scaled up to achieve large unsupported spans over spaces such as great rooms.
The frame is assembled with wood-on-wood joinery (no metal fasteners). Each piece is connected to its mate with variations on the mortise and tenon joint and secured with white oak pegs.
(heavy duty screws secure the post feet to the deck. The purlins which pass between the two trusses and support roof deck boards are secured to the trusses with heavy duty screws for uplift resistance)
